Our History

According to available records and older members’ input, Pleasant Oak Baptist Church was formed in 1863 at Pointy Grove neighborhood, Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Land was donated to form the church by the wife of a former slave owner. It appears that the legal formation of the church did not occur until 1872. Records also indicate that Pleasant Oak is possibly a sister church of St. Matthews Baptist Church, Kenbridge, Virginia.

In 1908, the church moves from the location on the Poorhouse Road to its present location. The present Church was built in 1925. The bulk of the materials were donated by a church attended by whites in the town of Victoria. These worshippers built a new structure and gave the old to Pleasant Oak. The church was disassembled and carted by horse and wagon to its present site and reassembled by local craftsmen. Pleasant Oak had total renovation efforts completed in 1992, under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. James L. Green.

The present state of Pleasant Oak is owed to a great number of saints who dared to catch onto the vision and move ahead. A great number of these hardworking believers have gone to be with the Lord. We pause to salute the pioneers who, without a doubt, put God first.  Even with limited financial resources, they were able to hold on and keep Pleasant Oak afloat.
